LG unveils pocket printer for smartphones and tablets

LG's new pocket-sized printer is 4mm thinner than its predecessor, making it one of the smallest mobile photo printing devices on the market.

LG has announced a new slimmed-down version of its pocket-sized printer ahead of the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, enabling users to print 2 x 3 inch photos from a tablet or smartphone.

Measuring 7.2 x 12.1 x 2.0cm, the Pocket Photo 2.0 is 4mm thinner than its predecessor, making it one of the smallest mobile photo printing devices on the market. Compatible with both Android and iOS, smartphone and tablet users can connect wirelessly to the printer via NFC or Bluetooth.

Pictures are rendered at 313 dots per inch (dpi). The printer uses ZINK technology, which uses heat to activate the necessary colour-forming chemicals embedded in each sheet of paper, eliminating the need for ink cartridges.

LG has added new editing features and a new set of filter effects to the accompanying Pocket Photo app, as well as a frame augmentation feature. Users can also embed QR codes in photos, allowing them to bring up a digital version of the photo on their device.

“Printed photos have a sentimental appeal that digital images are not truly able to replicate,” said Byung-hoon Min, senior vice president of LG’s Home Entertainment Company.

“Our newest Pocket Photo embraces the emotional aspect of the printed photo while offering a level of portability and convenience that are missing from today’s digital cameras.”

The Pocket Photo 2.0 is available in pink, white and yellow. It is now available in China and will be rolling out globally in 2014.
